We discover and love Corby Tindersticks

 

I am so excited to introduce on the blog Corby Tindersticks. This brand brings a huge smile on my face! Anyone who knows me, knows how much I love quirky and unique illustrations. So this is no surprise that Corby Tindersticks caught my eyes. The range was started this summer 2013, the Yorkshire born designer Carla Gledhill is the brain behind this amazing world. She has created a universe full of crazy and fun characters who come to life in this range of products from toys to clothes to home deco:

Loving this local artist, Simon Lee.

Cape Town is a village, it's true. We all seem to know one another, all related somehow. So when I was looking for a new illustrator to do some artwork for my kids range, it didn't take me long to find Simon, who was a friend of a friend of a friend.... My friend had described his work as a little dark and quirky, those words clearly resonated with me! I couldn't wait to meet him and see some of his work. I wish I could show you his sketch book, his drawings are amazing, yes a little dark and quirky which I love! He emailed me some his work which he was exhibiting in Jo'burg ( images above). Here is getting to know a little more about Simon:

1. WWKA: Simon, where do you get your inspiration from?
 I'm not really sure, but I get inspired when I notice something in life that has the potential to generate an interesting and original idea. Again, I can't really pinpoint these situations, they just happen. In short, I guess I just draw.
2.WWKA: Do you have a favourite subject to draw?
I most enjoy abstract images with interesting perspectives and fine detail, often combined with more recognizable images, such as animals.
3. WWKA: what do you want to do when you grow up?
Ha, absolutely no clue. An acrobat. No, I don't know.
4.WWKA: What band are you listening to at the moment?
Maps and Atlases. And Knxwledge. And Foals.
5. WWKA: what did you have for breakfast?
 Futurelife and boiled eggs

Some beautiful children's images @ Flannery o'kafka

Here are some of my favourite kids images ever. That first pic kills me, it is so beautiful!

I fell upon Flannery O'kafka's website a few months ago... I loved the way Andrea works, she has a natural talent for capturing those unaware beautiful moments in kids. I also fell in love with the way Andrea spoke about her work on her site: "It's my documenting of the 'making' we do in my(our)daily life--a mix of family snapshots, unashamed sentimentality, my portraits, commercial/editorial work often featuring various children of mine, and intentional creative family living."

The world of Alice

I discovered Alice Dufay's work in Papier Mache one day, and was drawn to the simplicity of her work. It's been so amazing from me with the blog, to get to know all these very talented people and I am always interested to get to know more about them.

WWKA- You have done a lot of work for kids fashion magazine such as Papier Mache, how did that come about?

I love this kind of magazine (even if I do not have a child yet ...), it's very inspiring.

So one day, I decided to send them an email, to tell them that I love their world and if they wanted to see my artwork, it will be a pleasure for me to do some stuff for them.... it simply started like this.

WWKA- where do you get your inspiration from?

From kid's magazine but also from cinéma, music, street ...a small detail, a piece of paper can inspire me.

WWKA- do you have any favourite subjects to draw?

I love to draw little girls,  I love the kid's simplicity in their posture. I also love to draw hair.

WWKA- Any big plans for this year?

I work for a few different brands, but unfortunately can't really talk about it...sorry :)

WWKA- if you were a character in a fairytale who would you be?
Alice in wonderland of course.
In addition to sharing the same name, I like the way Lewis Carroll has told the meeting with Alice Liddlle., it's very complex.

I found this sweet Honeycup on Etsy. This illustrator is from Melbourne, Australia. I am having a fox fixation at the moment, so suddenly I am seeing fox prints all over the place. And her print of the little deer girl with the red fox is really cute. So there you go! Foxes are rocking my world this month!

I haven't been on Etsy for a while, which is a shame because I almost forgot how many great artists have wonderful things to share on this site. My first go to on Etsy are illustrators, and this week I am happy to find the quirky, nerdy and cute illustrations of Nan Lawson. She is a self-taught illustrator living and working in the Silverlake neighbourhood of LA. I am drawn to her quirky characters who all look very pensive with their eyes closed.

A is for Atpalicis

I am so fond of illustrations like these, there is something quirky and charming about them. I especially like the 1st one of The Little Red Riding Hood in the bad wolf's tummy. Elly MacKay is one truly talented artist. I LOVE  her work! She creates these amazing images by inking yupo paper, cuts it into layers and then sets it up in a miniature theater. She plays around with lights and takes pictures of them. How super creative! And what a beautiful result!
